I would avoid a medical approach in which the focus is on the long term effects of drugs and alcohol. It is difficult for most teens to see beyond next week. Or stated another way, teens feel immune to the disease including cigarette smoking. As an recovering alcoholic of 24 years, I am not sure that a campaign would have had any effect on me. Perhaps, an advertising campaign highlighting a death(s) of high school age teens from your local area and socioeconomic background would be more impressive. For, teens dealing with shyness and the uncharted waters between childhood and adulthood alcohol is the therapy of choice. In my world binge drinking was 6 weeks of unbroken drinking of which I am ashamed. I do not know what the term “binge drinking” means today. One serious alcohol issue is consuming a large amount in a brief period of time. It can induce alcohol poisoning in an experienced drinker. I think there are deaths each year from so-called “chugging” contests. Non-beer products are really too potent for most teens. In most cases, a teen has grown up in a household that does not celebrate events with open drinking. I came from a family of dinner wines and beers. So, I my excuse was shyness that must be “medicated.” You do not have a simple task and I am not sure there is magic bullet solution to the task before you. I think a young person (19 to 21) would be an excellent speaker in your ads. I knew a college mate who drank heavily after vehicular killling a high school friend on graduation night. He was fighting those demons many years later. Appearing happy but always drunk.
