Was this emotional abuse?

Question by auslise: Was this emotional abuse?
Yes, I know I need to seek more professional help with this issue, but I’d really like some quick input to begin with. I’ve been having horrible relationship problems, and it’s just really hit me that I may be the victim of emotional abuse and neglect as a child…my mother chooses to devote her attention to loser men, while mostly ignoring/neglecting me. My mom isn’t a terrible person. For most of my life, I’ve had to deal with her choosing some of the worst of men (alcoholics, high school dropouts, ignorant, unemployed and refusing to be employed, verbally abusive, etc.). My current stepdad is all of the above, and he’s essentially a dependent of my mom (though he has no disability other than being a good for nothing deadbeat…though to hear him talk in his loud, boisterous, obnoxious voice, he’s king of the world). After more than a few years of just doing odd jobs, while she provided him with a home, money, medical insurance, etc., he’s only now agreed to go to a community college and take a course in being a taxi driver. A major part of this problem is that, while catering to these men, following them around like a puppy, so eager to help, she generally criticizes me, ignores me, corrects me, doesn’t divulge much about herself and questions every single last detail of my life. As a child, I was so terrified and miserable, as my now step dad was so mean and threatening to me all the time. Despite all I’d suffered, she even married my stepfather while I was at college, and never even told me…one day when I happened to call home, he answered and, gloating, filled me in on the news. If I call her for something, she’ll sometimes ignore me and respond later, but she always makes sure to answer when my stepdad calls. When I have good news, she answers with the same, generic, “Oh, that’s great!” She’s also made the statement that, unlike what other parents often tell their children, there’s no such thing as my being too good for just any man. She almost seems to encourage the mistakes I make in my life, and embraced my previous boyfriends who I (later, of course) and any other friend acknowledged as a complete loser. She’s always made sure that all my material wants are met, and she claims to love me, but emotionally, I’ve always felt a bit empty and envious while she lavished most of her attention, personality and concern on these horrid men…my own relationships have definitely suffered, and I’m generally a flipping emotional wreck most of the time. It was recently her birthday, and while I tried to give her the best gifts I could, he, as usual, got her nothing. What was worse was how, while she smiled and thanked me for my gifts, she said gifts weren’t really important to her, and she wasn’t that kind of person – as if my efforts were nice, but unnecessary. I’ve done all I can to prove to her that I’m worthy of her attention, but she just doesn’t seem to see it. What is the issue here…I know none of this bs is my fault, as it began when I was a very small child? Any ideas what her problem is (I suspect my grandfather was very controlling when she was young)? Thanks so much for any input (other than to run far, far away, screaming, with my arms flailing all about)!

maybe it’s just being harsh. however, you have to understand that as long as you’re exposed to some kind of cultural structure, then at that point, things are a little less difficult generally.

If you want to shock people, especially teens, start with something like ‘last year X amount of teenagers died as a result or in relation to alcohol’. Then you could throw in car crashes, date rapes, fist fights that result from alcohol, followed by liver disease, heart problems etc. Point out the homeless in the street and ask your audience how they think that tramp whth the cider bottle got there? Mention addiction, how alcohol ruins lives, destroys families. End it on a big plus on how people are starting to realise how serious drinking is and are becoming more responsible as a result. Hope that helps.

Answer by rhonda k
i have dealt with people addicted my whole life and the stuff i have seen and blessed me to never get into drugs i am actually scared to dealth of them!!

well the drug addiction around is gettin very bad..aslot of people start taking pain killers like maybe a doctor will start someone on a lower pain killer like vicodin and sometimes wat happens is the person is finished getting them from their doctor and then they begin getting them on the street s then the lower pill doesnt work anymore so they go higher to maybe percocet or even oxycoton….and then the next thing u know they have to take what they can find and it leads to even herion, but there are alot more ways also that they end up taking them thats just one of many different ways

ok about drug treatment,a person has to goto one really wanting too! cause in cases of someone hooked on oxycotton, methadone, percocets if they have been taking them faithfully they will get dope sick which raises heart rate and blood pressure and CAN be fatal in some cases, but you have to go in really wanting to safely get off and be done and thats only up to the person if u go in wanting it cause u want it it can be very successfull

but alot of people just go because they are couret ordered and are just doing it so they dont have to return to jail and those people ususally are still taking the drug and just finding ways so they dont give a dirty urine and some others are doing it because chil social services are making a parent do it so that person can have their kids back and those are the people that arent doing it because they are tired of it and want to quit they are going in because they are being told to

and another thing is like i said b4 the drug addiction around is growing and growing and in a few cases its jus a bunch of people thrown in mixed with the ones that want it and the ones that are only there because they are being told they have too and theres really no pin pointing anyone like really not enough counslors to give the one on one to the ones that really want it and alot of their time is being wasted on the ones that are only there cause they were made to … and it takes away from the ones that are there cause they walked in there wanting it and tired of it …cause some of the herion, oxycotton users really do have to come off safely because it can be in some cases fatal and dangerous…and maybe some are just on cocain and crack, meth which those u really dont get what u call dope sick off of…

but it is hard but the real success is real in the people that are walking in there because they want it,want to change, tired of the drugs…thats where they do succeed…they donot succeed in the ones that arent walking in there because they want it ..they walking in because theres a judge making them or a social worker or a husband threatning to leave a wife if dont go..or the other way around

the success is going to the few that are tired of depending on the drugs and want to quit because they want to not because of some system saying they have to or a reletive, spouse saying go or else….thats not goig to be a success…and theres alot of people that dont want to and theres prolly fewer that do want to …

well i hope that gave u some good info

Can mental abuse from a parent (father) affect a childs learning and social ability?

quick alcoholic help
by lhall

Question by sherbert: Can mental abuse from a parent (father) affect a childs learning and social ability?
My father is an alcoholic and started mentally abusing me when I was about ten years old (grade four). I started becoming depressed and I was also being bullied at school.

By eleven-twelve years old (grade six) it started getting worse and my father would yell and scream at me and blame me for everything that was going on between my mother and himself (they were divorced by this time and had been separated for years. They had shared custordy of my lil bro and me) and also would scream at me saying everything was my mothers fault. Not something great when you’re eleven years old.

I was eleven years old when I first harmed myself. People and teachers in primary school (i assume) thought I was some freak for it as well. I would start crying out in class randomly because of my father.

It took me many years of councelling to get back on track and still today I go through very harsh depressive states where I have overdosed on painkillers and cut myself again (also because of school and family life, not only my father).

Most of my subjects are passing grades, but I feel I could be excelling more in them if I wanted to.

I find it hard to casually talk to people at school (I only moved to the school last year, but the new group I’m with I only started hanging around at the beginning of this year) and I feel people are always looking down on me as if I’m worthless. This makes me feel absolutey worthless with everything else being on top. I feel that I’m not good or pretty enough for peoples standards to be their friends.

I had a councellor weekly when I used to live with my father and just after I started living with my mother full time to help me through school and my father but that is it other than school councellors on and off through high school. They only seem like a quick fix for me for about 24 hours.

Could of my fathers influence have anything to do with the way I feel or am or am I really just some messed up person?

This may sound crazy to some people but I need to get better before I study psychology (that’s the plan, anyway) at uni. I also have been told by my school councellor that I can excel in a career in psychology because I wont need to visulize and try and put myself in other peoples perspectives when I already know, as I have been in some situations where you just can’t be taught about. I don’t want to be studying psychology when, really, I’m the one who needs it. If I can find my answers and try and help myself through my problems, I may be able to help myself to a better way of life.

Sorry for the exam-like details! Haha!

Peace x

I DONT DO IT, but i think a kid I know does

What are some things that give away a heroin abuser/junkie?

Answer by I Love Richard KHC
I don’t know if this is the kind of heroin that you are asking about but they are very similar drugs. My brother is addicted to Oxycottins not sure if that’s how you spell it. It’s called Hillbilly Heroin, and it gives basically the same effects, he snorts them but Heroin of course you shoot that into a vein. Look for spoons with a burnt back, needles of course and His mood. They will get very moody, and they doze off a lot if they are on it. When they are coming off of it they can get violent and very sick, puking, diarrhea, stomach pains, sweating. They will never have money because that’s all they spend their money on. My brother has pawned everything he owns that is pawnable. He has stolen from me, my parents, my uncle and he has robbed people. He is now starting to get clean only because he is dealing with court issues and if he doesn’t want to go to jail he has to straiten up now. He is about to be put on probation for 19 months and if he does the drug he will go to jail. This is what the life of a junkie is like. If you ask them about they will lie, they become very good liars only you never believe them because they have lied so much that you don’t believe anything that comes out of their mouth and they will screw over anyone that gives them the chance to. My grandma used to have pity on my brother and believe his lies, she would give him the money he asked for so he could go get his drugs, then she wised up. No one gives him money anymore. If he needs something they might buy it for him but never give him money or anything that he can pawn. Like at Christmas time, he get clothes because he can’t pawn Clothes.

verbal abuse? need advice quick?

Question by me: verbal abuse? need advice quick?
i have 2 children one 6 the other 5 weeks i am with the father of the baby. we moved to a new town when i was pregnant and since moving my partner has been yelling and swearig at my 6 year old over nothing he thinks he is disciplining and not doing anything wrong my family has noticed and just said something to me about it, i have a very supportive family who are looking out for my 6 year old but my partner has taken offence when i tried talking to him about it telling him my family have noticed now he wont talk to me at all. he is capable of being good to him but i think the mood he is in determines how he treats him. i am starting to think he may be an alcoholic he got very deffensive when i mentioned this as he wants to go out drinking at least once a week. he will often not get home from work till midnight as he goes to the pub straight from work i have tried asking him to come home for tea first but no luck. when he is home he can spend an entire day sleeping on the couch and still not have trouble sleeping at night it often seems as though the only time he is happy is when he is drinking. i want some outside advice as well should i move back to the town where my family lives or should i stay and try get my partner some help as i have already decided i will not put up with this behaviour for my childrens sake what do you think is best for them? by the way my partner still needs to realise he has a few problems still in denial

What is the difference between drug abuse and drug addiction?

Question by Chronic: What is the difference between drug abuse and drug addiction?
I am witing something freelance and just wondering if anyone can give me an addequite difference between drug abuse and drug addiction.

The definition of an addict is: 1. To cause to become physiologically or psychologically dependent on a habit-forming substance
2. To occupy (oneself) with or involve (oneself) in something habitually or compulsively

Definition of drug abuse: he use of illegal drugs or the inappropriate use of legal drugs. The repeated use of drugs to produce pleasure, to alleviate stress, or to alter or avoid reality (or all three).

The use of a drug for a purpose other than that for which it is normally prescribed or recommended.

the habitual misuse of a chemical substance

They are very similar definitions. Almost the same.

Why are people either classified as a drug abuser or a drug addict? Drug abusers don’t usually get the intese care an addict does. Remember, the definition for addic includes psychological addiction… not just physical.

Answer by Nico
drug abuse-when you get pain killers from the doctor and you take too many for the effects

addiction is when you can’t stop taking them, because you’re addicted to them.

drug abuse usually comes before addiction
