My big brother is having a relationship with Mary Jane (marijuana). He knows that it’s not good for him but he says he likes what it does to him so he continues to use it. The thing is, Mary Jane’s really affecting his life. He’s getting failing grades in school (he’s really smart so I don’t know how that happened) and he’s getting worse at baseball. He even spends more time locked up in his room with Mary Jane than hanging out with anyone else. I think he really needs help. He’s such a gifted person and I don’t want his talents to go into waste. We’re from Eastport, Maine.

Do your parents KNOW??? I’d start by telling my parents. After that there isn’t much you can do except for praying.

We eloped to get married. We are now planning a party on a small budget. We want to invite friends and family (keeping it to approx 100 guests) – people who are part of our lives, people who have been good to us and support us being together. My brother is a heroin junkie and crack addict. My whole life (I’m 29 now) he has stolen things from me, lied to me, stolen money from me, since I was a baby. He stole CD’s, games, clothes with tags attached from me and my daughter, any loose change sitting around in the house or car, building materials from my house( a faucet set, copper plumbing, etc..- he broke in while I wasn’t there and left the door unlocked several times), and pain pills when I had problems with my teeth (which led me to a painful time without my medicine). I have tried in the past to have him in my life as my brother, I’ve asked him to hang out, he always says no. I never see him anymore because I have written him out of my life. I chose a different path than him. I do not support him, I do not enable him. I am the only family member that has disowned him. My parents and brothers and sisters still give him money and invite him to family events, he usually doesn’t show up and uses tha time as an advantage to rob them while he knows they are all not at home.
My mom is really upset and syas she will not come to my reception because I say he is not invited. This is not negotiable. he is not invited.period. I do not want to ruin my night worrying that he is using in the bathroom, stealing someone’s camera or wallet, or stealing any gifts we receive. My husband feels the same way I do. I told my mom that she is acting like a child. This is MY day. He chose to be how he is, enough is enough. I’m not ruining my day to invite someone that isn’t in my life, never has been, never will be. He is close to death, he is really ugly looking now, sores on his face, scraggly hair, really skinny. It would be an embarasment for any relatives on my husband’s side or mine to see him how he is. I should mention that he abandoned his 3 beautiful children for drugs, does not have a job, has warrants for his arrest, drives a wrecked up car without a license, and has a girlfriend who works in the medical field who supplies him with narcotics and money.
Thoughts? Opinions?
If I did invite him (which I’m not doing) my evening would be spent watching him, worrying about what he’s doing. I would have to alert all invited guests to watch their pusres, etc. Simply put – his being there would ruin my wedding for myself and my husband. I would not be happy, I would not have a good time. It wouldn’t be worth it. We would sooner not have a celebration than invite him. One of the reasons we eloped.
Butch – This is more than disapproval. It’s been 29 years of abuse with no end in sight. So it’s right to allow someone to hurt you thousands of times? When is it enough? I should allow him to abuse me and keep stealing form me simply because we share parents? Oh yeah, he left 2 needles UNCAPPED in my house. I should allow him to be in my life and endanger my family? I almost got stabbed by one of those needles. I should allow him to give me whatever diseases his needle sharing body has??? What if a guest not only finds a needle, but what if a child does, and gets stuck by it? I have to be concerned for my guests safety as well as my own.

You can disapprove of your brother’s behavior and still invite him to your wedding. All that says is that you still love him, nothing more. If he’s an actual physical threat to others, you have good reason to exclude him. Aside from that, I’d invite him. Let him come and enjoy the moment with you and your family, maybe it will encourage him to change his behavior, maybe it won’t, but you will never have to regret NOT inviting him. The future is so uncertain, live so as to not regret the past by making the right choices in the present. Hope that helps.

The family wants to do an intervention, but his self esteem is so minimal that we fear it will reinforce his negative view of himself and instead of accepting the help, he will leave and commit suicide. Also, we would like to place him in an inpatient rehab facility. Does anyone know of an affordable facility?

NO place with take a patient NOT willing to be treated. Find a good counselor that does interventions, work with them and let the chips fall where they may. Not easy but honest, watch “Intervention” on A&E and get some background on the situation
