Is Alcoholism Really a Disease?

Question by Mike Fields: Is Alcoholism Really a Disease?
Best as I understand it, the idea that alcoholism is a “disease” comes from the popular 12-Step methods (such as Alcoholics Anonymous) so lauded for their ability to help sufferers of alcoholism. But also, best as I understand it, 12-Step programs are made up. Support groups with no science back them up and have a ridiculously high failure rates.

So you often get (and I believe this was parodied on South Park once) people living their lives with utter reckless abandon, hurting family members left and right, and blaming their behavior on the horrible “disease” of alcoholism that renders them helpless to change. I’ve heard people describe their alcoholism as if it’s something comparable to cancer or MS, something completely beyond their control for which they must always suffer and for which we ought to feel sorry for.

So I’m curious what you all think about it. Is Alcoholism really a disease?

Is alcoholism really a disease ?

Question by : Is alcoholism really a disease ?
Seems a lot like a cop out to me.

A disease you cant control & then in treatment, they want you to admit you are powerless.

It just seems counter intuitive to me.

Ive had my share of incidents but I stopped…on my own…without help and without admitting I was powerless.

I should have stopped sooner but I am still not powerless and I don’t believe its a disease.

Isn’t it possible the traditional treatment is WRONG ?? I mean, its not like they have a good track record.

Question by scales_d: i get sick of hearing alcoholism is a disease if it is a disease ?
how can people change with the help of pills it does not make it their fault therefore they do not take reponsibility, I am doing a psychology degree and their are so many psychologist that dispute this idea as it does not enable a person to take responsibility and therefore is not helping them to alter their behaviour, i think its irresponsible to blame it on a disease dont you

If alcoholism is a disease then it can be cured…?

Question by Athman: If alcoholism is a disease then it can be cured…?
I had a problem with alcohol for years and AA just told me that I was powerless and couldn’t help myself. After I left AA and concentrated on getting better, I found that I wasnt an alcoholic and I needed to temper my drinking and take care of the underlying causes of why i drank. If i would have stayed in AA I would never have stopped drinking heavily. What are your opinions?

Best answer:

Answer by Dagobot
AA works with counseling. Most people don’t find that underlying cause of why they drink. All they know is that they drink and they drink alot. The term alcoholic means that there is no tempering of drinking. The entire focus of AA is that you are powerless to alcohol and that tempering drinking is not an option. If you can’t stop drinking, for any reason, then you are addicted to it, hence making you powerless.
Now, the fact that you were able to find your deamons and confront them, thats great, but if you still drink, the question is why?

Can binge drinking be considered a disease?

Question by Eliza17: Can binge drinking be considered a disease?
My brother is a binge drinker and my dad believes that its a disease and that he might have inherited the problem from a family member. Is this possible?

Best answer:

Answer by Nans
I think it depends on how long his binges are and how often. I don’t think its a disease though. I think that its cultivated behavior that becomes a habit and then the body becomes dependent. It can be psycologically habit forming to drink like that, but I don’t think its genetic

How will binge drinking (excess of 5 drinks) two times weekly affected a person with heart disease?

Question by Anne L: How will binge drinking (excess of 5 drinks) two times weekly affected a person with heart disease?
I am wondering if there is a medical doc out there who could give me some insight into a situation with a loved one? He is diagnosed with heart disease and the related med. conditions that go with this dx. He has also had kidney stone problems, new issues, for the past two months. Seems after he binge drinks, only red wine, of course….Good for the heart. He has to miss work the next day and attributes it to upset stomack and kidney stone pain. He has been a long time heavy drinker for most of his life and he is 51. Tryglycerd. levels not in good zone and either is HDL, too low. Continues to drink and has become emotionally and physcially numb. Zero sex drive and desire for affection and wants to end our relationship because I need more. Many issues here. Is it the alcohol. I keep thinking he is going to die soon if he continues with his denial.

He is an alcoholic..he needs serious help, BUT he has to want the help. He is causing serious damage to his body and hurting everyone around him. You can go to a Alanon group (not sure if I spelled it right) for partners and/or family of alcoholics, they are free and all over the US

Is Drug Addiction A Choice Or A Disease?

Question by Daniel S: Is Drug Addiction A Choice Or A Disease?
I was just wondering your thoughts on Drug Addiction. I believe it is a choice, because we are the ones that decide to put stuff in our bodies.

Best answer:

Answer by dude4∞
I’d say it’s an addiction. It doesn’t start off as a choice. You don’t say, “I want to be addicted to heroin.” You start off by making one bad decision which leads to a bad habit and then you start making more bad choices and it snowballs.

It’s definately not a disease. I’ve been addicted to drugs and I’ve had diseases. No comparison.

I was offered my first cigarette when I was in kindergarten and I accepted. Did I choose at that point to be a drug addict? I didn’t know the long term affects and how it would lead me to smoking weed and so on.

I chose to quit all that. You can’t just choose to quit having a disease. If it really matters to you and it’s really what you want, you can choose to walk away. But it takes awhile to get to that point, and I had to choose it again and again.
And again.
