Q&A: How will I get my friend to undergo drug addiction treatment?

Question by carmen_n: How will I get my friend to undergo drug addiction treatment?
She’s so stubborn. She won’t budge. She says heroin makes her happy and that I’m not a real friend because I’m trying to take away what makes her happy. What do I do? I don’t know what to say to her, but I don’t want to just give up and let her do whatever she wants because I know this is bad for her.

You can always do a drug intervention. If you don’t know how to do this on your own, you can get a professional to help you, or call 800-559-9503 to ask for advice. They can also point you in the direction of drug treatment centers. Have you tried explaining the harmful effects of heroin to your friend? Have you tried to get her to see that she’s better off without the drug? She lived without it for years, does she really want to be dependent upon it now? Her happiness does not lie in heroin. It can be found inside her. She only has to make that choice to be optimistic and brave through life with acceptance and openness to all things that may come her way. Get her to see that heroin is not helping her, it’s actually ruining her and her body. Good luck! I’m glad she’s got someone like you who’s so concerned about her.

Anyone know about tryptophan for Alcoholism treatment?

Question by srar: Anyone know about tryptophan for Alcoholism treatment?
I heard it helps with impulse control.

Best answer:

Answer by circanow0
I wouldn’t use this unless it is being prescribed by a doctor or psychiatrist. It is much better to concentrate on good general nutrition, and perhaps a daily vitamin supplement. Alcoholism is a disease of body, mind and spirit, and the best insurance against relapse is involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous.

Q&A: How come drug addiction treatment is needed so that a drug addict will abstain from drug intake?

Question by athziri cc: How come drug addiction treatment is needed so that a drug addict will abstain from drug intake?
Can’t they do it by sheer will power and going cold turkey?

Best answer:

Answer by destiny n
A lot of people think that they can just get off of drugs when they take it because they have strong will power. This is not the case. Will power won’t cut it. This is due to the fact that the body and brain gets accustomed to the presence of the drug. The drug alters brain functioning and the brain gets convinced that the drug is needed by the body. Once the body is deprived of the drug, the body will send signals to the brain that it needs the drug to function. This manifests in the form of withdrawal symptoms. Thus, the individual is forced to continue on with his drug intake. This is why drug addiction treatments are needed. Therapy, counseling, and medication will help individuals conquer their addiction and gradually pave the way to sobriety.

What is alcoholism treatment?

Question by abby j: What is alcoholism treatment?
My husband has been an alcoholic for three years and I have found research findings proving how alcohol affects brain function. I would like to find out how alcoholism can be treated. Please help me find him a good rehab center where he can get alcoholism treatment.

Best answer:

Answer by ana f
You have mentioned how alcoholism affects brain function. I am glad to inform you that the initiative you took to find out the effects of alcoholism is one of the best ways to treat addiction. Education is a powerful tool. Most alcoholics have no idea how much damage they are causing because of this dangerous and ‘unbreakable’ habit.

I suggest that you share with your husband whatever information you might find about alcoholism especially those about how to get alcoholism treatment. Knowing how alcohol can take its toll on his body functions may also convince him to stop drinking.

Overcoming alcoholism will not only require rehab treatment but also the support and understanding of family and friends. Oftentimes, when an alcoholic fails to admit his addiction, an intervention is done between him and his loved ones. This would make the alcoholic realize his problem and eventually accept the fact that he needs treatment.

Aside from undergoing rehab treatment and joining social organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous, self-control is also an effective alcoholism treatment. It would require commitment and discipline to lessen alcohol consumption. Although it may seem difficult for an alcoholic to abstain from drinking, his very self-control may just be the most effective way to make him stay sober.

I wish you and your husband the best.

What is the treatment to Demerol drug addiction?

Question by becky: What is the treatment to Demerol drug addiction?
My roommate Kit is addicted to a drug called Demerol. I think it’s a pain killer that she uses to maximize the effects brought by other sedatives. Demerol makes her drowsy, lightheaded, lethargic and sweaty. Lately, she told me that she’s having trouble with her stomach too. Now that she’s finally experiencing its side effects, Kit asked me to look for a possible treatment. She told me that she wants to quit taking Demerol and that she wants to change. Please help us. Thank you.

Best answer:

Answer by lynne
I think there are available medications to help treat Demerol addiction but I think the best solution is for your roommate Kit to enter a drug rehabilitation center. Doctors, therapists and professional counselors are more knowledgeable about treating Demerol addiction. They will not only help Kit get over her addiction but they will also help her deal with her problems better. Convince Kit to enter a rehab. It’s the right thing to do. To help you understand more about Demerol addiction and to help you find a drug rehab, I posted some links below.

Do you feel that the government provides enough resources for the treatment of drug addiction?

Question by jpertello: Do you feel that the government provides enough resources for the treatment of drug addiction?
Government money for treatment is harder to come by. The Bush administration’s .7 billon drug-control budget request for 2007 earmarks 65% for interdiction and law enforcement and barely 35% for treatment and prevention. A National Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse report found that, of the 7 that each American paid on average in state taxes to deal with substance abuse and addiction in 1998, only went toward treatment and prevention.

Best answer:

Answer by Debbie W
Why should they? Why should we, as taxpayers, pay for addictions to alcohol or drugs? Maybe the concentration should be put more on those MDs abusing the prescription privalege, as well as the street hustler who is selling illegal ones….or even more importantly, the big dealers who import it. Watch US ports and landing strips…whatever it takes to cut down on the number of drugs brought into this country illegally. But paying for someone’s addiction is like paying for their stupidity and lack of self control.

Q&A: Will my 17mos. old neice be taken away from my sister if she seeks drug addiction treatment?

Question by momof4: Will my 17mos. old neice be taken away from my sister if she seeks drug addiction treatment?
My sister is recently separated from her husband. She and my 16mos. old niece live with my parents, who are supporting her in every way. We are concerned with my sisters serious drug addiction to pain killers, started after the birth of my niece. My sister has a fear if she seeks treatment, the baby will be taken away from her. Is this true? How could that be? If she seeks out treatment, and the 72 hours she is in detox, her family will be taking care of the baby.

Best answer:

Answer by Blether T
The child wont be taken away. She will be asking for help and she lives with parents everything will be fine if she gets the help she needs.
Good luck
