Question by : How can I reconcile the awful truth about my gf’s past?
Several months ago I met up with an old GF from HS who had to move away, so we never really broke up, but we moved on since there was nothing we could do about it. 25 years goes by and I get phone call from her and we start seeing each other again. It was a fantastic romantic and emotional reunion & it’s been pretty darn fun, but over the past few months, I’ve learned of some horrible things about her past, from her. I’ve also found that she is most sensitive & not nearly as warm & loving as she was 25 years ago. The reason for this is clear; her past has been atrocious. Her parents were cruel, she became addicted to heavy drugs & was a homeless runaway who ended up with even worse people than her parents. She was raped & beaten, forced into prostitution & crime and has done several years in jail for those crimes. She was raped again and became pregnant, which got her into a shelter, off of drugs & therapy. 4 years after she her son & kept him, she fell off the wagon and started using heroin again. But she knew she couldn’t do that again, so she sought help at a methadone clinic where she is now on methadone maintenance & hasn’t used drugs at all for 7 years, aside from the low dose methadone. She is involved with a women’s therapy group as well as a private therapist.

Also she has been a lesbian since her son was born, but I’m a guy and she’s pursuing me.

So I’m a regular dude, who has never solicited sex from a hooker, nor have I ever been in prison. I’m a clean man with a job and honor, dignity and self respect. When I first saw her after 25 years it was one of the most incredible & awesome moments in my life, because we really did love each other way back in the day. But now after slowly learning about her history, it’s like a nightmare. I love her, but I’m blown away by the things she has done & the decisions she made. So really, what am I supposed to do now? How can I come to terms with all that and have peace of mind with this woman, or do you believe what I believe, that I’m stained now & life is too short to take an ex-junkie prostitute, thug & rape victim seriously? I’ve been very good to her & I do love her, but I am stressed beyond my comfort zone about her crazy life & I’d like some thoughts, advice or comments, just so I can use the information to help me make my own decision. Thanks for reading & considering my questions.
